A Germaphobe’s Trip to The Public Restroom

“Don’t touch anything just stand still, baby. Mama has to spray the potty first.”

“There, we’re all set. You can pee now.  Keep your hands on Mama and don’t touch the seat, ok.”

“Eeek! Don’t touch the flush!  We have to get tissue first. Here spray your hands!”

If you were in a public restroom last Sunday and heard those very words, you have witnessed my daughter’s first public restroom experience.  Yup, my daughter’s turning four in less than a month yet this is the first time she’s gone out without a diaper.  You see, this germaphobic mom has a fear of public restrooms and would rather hold her pee in than use one.  It’s unhealthy, I know, but I dislike the idea of sitting in a potty where hundreds of other people have sat also.  Horrors, I have heard of some who even sit on it like a frog with both feet on the toilet seat.  I know most of you understand this aversion to using public restrooms and I know many moms also avoid having their little daughters use the restroom as well.

However, my daughter can’t be running around in diapers all through childhood so we bravely faced a diaper-free day out. I had with me my arsenal for ensuring that she has the least possible contact with germs. We had potty spray, antibacterial wipes, toilet seat cover, and hand sanitizer spray. Though it took me forever to spray the potty, to wipe it clean with antibacterial wipes, and to line it with a toilet seat cover, my little girl was able to pee properly in the potty and had no “accidents” the entire day (Great job, Jade!).

This may not be a big deal for you, but it’s a milestone for both my daughter and I. I can now proudly say that she is fully potty-trained and has said goodbye to diapers even during bedtime (finally!).

  1. i hate using public restrooms, too! as much as possible i try to avoid it 🙂

  2. Congratulations Mommy and to your little girl. Using public restrooms is something we can’t avoid for the rest of our lives. it is right that we are ready all the time and the best solution is to always bring along a small bag with all of the stuff we need in keeping ourselves clean when using the restroom.

  3. I don’t sit on toilet bowls in public restrooms either, but I don’t stand on it ha. I just squat, mahirapan na kung mahirapan. Congrats to the little girl and to Mommy too!

  4. Nothing wrong I guess with being a germaphobe. I don’t think I call myself that though but that’s what I often do also when I take my kids to a trip to public toilets. I’m always armed with alcohol, alcogel, wet wipes, potty spray and soap. 🙂

  5. Thank you for writing this information online.

  6. Congratulations! You both did a great job. 🙂
Don’t worry, you’re not the only one.
I was never really conscious, although I never really sit on public toilet bowls, and as much as possible I minimize my public toilet use. But the consciousness started setting in when my princess came along. I really couldn’t let her use the toilet, like you, without the potty spray, antibacterial wipes, toilet seat cover, and hand sanitizer spray. I’m really glad these things were made. HAHA. I really make it a point that I bring all these handy whenever we’re outside.

  7. I can understand your averse reaction on public toilets and the thought of your daughter using it. Cleaning it meticulously aided in making the first trip of your daughter to use it lesser anxiety. Enjoy the rest of the week! ♪( ´θ`)ノ♥

  8. i feel for you. coz I am a confessed germaphobic too.. what more if i have my own child.

  9. oh, i’m like that too. my daughter is almost fully toilet trained now and i always bring alcohol when going to the public restrooms. good thing some malls here have provided antibacterial to wipe on the toilet!

  10. avoiding public restrooms is quite impossible. so i always make it a point that i have an alcohol and a potty spray with me.
but good thing, there are pay restrooms, and these are much cleaner as compared to those free ones 🙂

  11. OMG!!! I am so like you. I’d rather hold my pee than go to public restrooms. I think we should conquer that fear so we cant pass it on to our kids…

    Congrats to both of you.

  12. The lines (above the post)… Relate much! Hahhaha. But congrats that you and your daughter just made it well!
