Tsk! Money Down the Toilet

878.06, 924.01, 1,119.36 – those were our water bill for the last three months. Considering that there are only four of us in the house and water is mainly used for bathing and washing dishes, these amounts are just way too high. And even if we are under the semibusiness rate class, the amounts are still way over the usual 400-ish monthly bill we used to receive.

I told my Dad about the extremely high bill months ago and he asked if there was a leak in the toilet. There was no visible drips nor do I hear water trickling inside so I said no, but maybe I should get my plumber essendon to check. He then assumed that the pipe leak they repaired a couple of years ago must have sprung a leak again and said that he would have someone check it. Then that was it. The leak was forgotten until I saw the glaring 1,119.36 in this month’s bill.

1,119.36?!? We don’t even do the laundry here a home! That’s already more than twice our normal bill!

I was ranting about our bill with my mom friends in school when one of them mentioned that I should check the toilet. Apparently, the same thing happened to them also and a leak in the toilet was the culprit. She recommended I get Sarkinen Plumbing to come and have a look at it. I wanted to make sure it was definitely a toilet leak causing the issue before I called any plumbers, so that same day, I made sure that the toilet tank was full then turned off the water source. After a couple of hours, I flushed the toilet and what do you know – it was empty!

When hubby came home and heard about the toilet leak, he had a much better way of checking the leak. He filled the tank with water, turned off the water source, and dropped a piece of blue toilet cleaner inside the tank. He used a bucket to flush the toilet with clear water and waited a few seconds. Lo and behold, blue water started oozing from the hole at the bottom of the bowl! Oh yeah! Our toilet has been leaking our pockets dry for months! Tsk! Had we checked it months ago using someone like this leak detection company in San Diego, we wouldn’t have wasted so much money! Not that we can really do anything about it, at least we can get it sorted now though, even if I am annoyed for not getting it fixed earlier.

Oh well, there’s no use crying over leaked water. 😛 We learned our lesson and know the first thing to check when our water bill skyrockets next time (but hopefully never again).

Comments

  1. That will do it. That happened to us once as well.

  2. That’s a lot but normally summer gets the highest bill because of it’s warm weather and we basically want to cool down most of the time in the water.

  3. wow that is expensive. here at home, we do quarterly check up on water lines and the a/c… if we notice a spike of rate in our bill we check right away what could have caused that.

  4. I’ve had the same experience but at my aunt’s house. She left us to look after her house for two months and her bill skyrocketed to P60,000. You’d think she’s operating a resort!

  5. ooh, that’s really bad. I guess at the first month of sudden changes, you should have checked it already.
